Why candles never fixed it

Dog smell doesn’t live in the air. It’s a thin layer of skin oil, drool and dander on your floor, and it comes back every time the room gets warm. Candles and plug-ins sit a metre above it. Mop Soap for Dog Homes is a mild, concentrated cleaner built to lift that layer off and rinse it away in the bucket. One cap, 40 buckets.

  • No bleach, ammonia or phenols
  • No pine, tea tree or eucalyptus oil
  • Dries clear, no rinse step
  • Hardwood, LVP, tile & laminate

How to useIngredientsProblem story

The moment

“I asked my sister-in-law to be honest. She said she could smell dog as soon as she walked in. I was mortified. We open the windows every day.”

A dog owner on a UK parenting forum, one of 569 replies to “our house smells”

If you have a dog, you’ve had a version of this. The friend who hesitates in the doorway. The kid who says “it smells like a farm.” The week away that ends with you opening your own front door and thinking: oh. That’s what they smell.

Your nose stopped reporting it months ago. Theirs didn’t. And most of them are too polite to say anything, which is worse, because now you’re guessing.

So you light a candle before people come over. You keep a bottle of spray by the door “in case someone texts that they’re on the way.” You bathe the dog, and three days later the smell is back.

It’s not you. It’s not the dog. It’s where you’ve been looking.

Mechanism, expanded

Why nothing worked

You’ve been treating the air. The smell lives on the floor.

Paws, drool, skin oils and dander land on the floor every day, work into seams and grout, and release again every time the room gets warm or damp. A plug-in at shoulder height never touches it.

Where the smell is vs. where you’ve been fighting itcandleplug-inspraynose heightwater bowlpaw trafficthe nap spotthe largest surface in your house

Oils and bacteria from paws and coat bind to porous floor surfaces. Air products sit a metre above them.

Masking

Candles, plug-ins, sprays

  • Adds a scent on top
  • Dog smell comes back through it in an hour
  • “Dog, with a layer of Febreze”
  • Breathed in at your dog’s nose level

Removing

Dog Mop Co.

  • Lifts the oils off the surface
  • Nothing left for the warm room to re-release
  • Scent is what’s left after, not a cover
  • Dries clear, no film to lick

What the smell actually is

1

Your dog’s skin makes oil. Bacteria and yeast on the coat and paws eat that oil and give off the “dog” smell.

2

Every step and every nap leaves a thin layer of that oil, plus drool and dander, on the floor. It soaks into seams, grout and the finish.

3

Warmth and damp wake it up. That’s why the house smells worse on rainy days, and why mop water from a “clean” floor runs brown.

4

A fragrance can’t remove oil. A surfactant can. Dog Mop Co. is a plant-based surfactant cleaner at a floor-safe pH, built to pull that layer off and rinse it away in the bucket.

Safety objection

For the floor she sleeps on

Safe when she licks the floor.

“Pet safe” on a label doesn’t tell you much. Here is what we mean by it.

No bleach, ammonia or phenolsNo tea tree, pine or eucalyptus oilpH 6.5–7, same as waterDries clear, no sticky filmNo rinse stepHardwood · LVP · tile · laminate

The ingredients your vet warns you about in floor cleaners are the strong ones: bleach, pine oil, ammonia, and essential oils like tea tree and eucalyptus. We left all of them out and used a plant-based surfactant that does the lifting instead. Full ingredient list on the bottle and in the FAQ.

I’d been using plug-ins for years. The first mop with this, the bucket water was disgusting. That’s when it clicked where the smell was.

“Estate agent went out of his way to tell me there was no doggy smell.”

Two labs. We were terrified of viewings. Mopped the night before every one with Guest Room. Sold in three weeks.

Why every 4 weeks

The dog doesn’t stop. So the mop shouldn’t either.

You bathe him and three days later it’s back. The floor works the same way: the layer rebuilds. A bottle is about four weeks of twice-a-week mopping for an average home.

“Works. Wish the scent lasted a day longer.”

Two labs on hardwood. Smell is gone, that part is real. The scent fades by the next evening, but honestly that’s fine, I’d rather it be clean than perfumed.

That was the test for me. Every other time we’d come home to that wet-dog smell in the hallway. Mopped the day before we left. Nothing.

Questions

What dog owners ask us before they buy

Will my floors feel sticky or look streaky?

No. There’s no wax, oil or polymer in the formula, so it dries clear. If you ever see a haze, you used too much: one cap per bucket is enough. Over-dosing is what makes most scented cleaners leave a film.

My dog licks the floor. Is that a problem?

No. There’s no bleach, ammonia, pine oil or essential oils like tea tree in it, and once the floor is dry there’s nothing left on the surface. It uses the same type of mild cleaning agents as dish soap. Just don’t let her drink from the bucket.

How long does the smell stay gone?

Until the layer rebuilds, which for most homes is a few days to a week depending on the dog and the weather. That’s why we suggest mopping twice a week, and why a bottle lasts about a month.

Does it work on LVP, laminate and hardwood?

Yes. Use it with a damp mop, not a soaking one, on laminate and hardwood, same as any cleaner. Tile, LVP and sealed concrete can take a wetter mop.

Is it strong enough for two big dogs?

That’s who it was built for. For a first clean on a floor that’s never been treated, do two passes and change the water in between. You’ll see why.

Does it work in a spray mop or a robot mop?

Yes. One cap per bucket (about 1:40) for a regular mop. For a spray mop or robot tank, use 1:20.

What if it doesn’t work for my house?

Use it for 60 days. If someone who doesn’t live there still smells dog, email us and we refund the order, shipping included.
